Tech Thursday
There are some items that you may be better off not carrying with you all the time.  Have you ever thought, "What would happen if I lost my purse or wallet and someone with bad intentions rummages through it and steals what's inside?"  This is a very real possibility.  Here's a list provided by Marissa Laliberte (Reader's Digest) of items you should not carry.  Please note: These points are shared to help you consider what you carry with you that could result in worse-case scenerios.  Technology is a good and useful thing but can be used negatively in the wrong hands.
  • Passwords.  Seems obvious, doesn't it?  However, many people carry their passwords for bank accounts, online accounts, and other sensitive information with them.
  • Debit card.  These do not have the same protections as credit cards and, if used by someone with bad intentions, could wipe out your bank account in, literally, one swipe.  Think about using an ATM only card with a PIN to get cash.
  • Laptop.  OK... you aren't going to carry this in your wallet.  But a purse is a real possibility.  The weight of the laptop in a purse can strain your shoulder which can lead to many posture issues and even injuries.  A backpack or messenger bag is a better solution.
  • Receipts.  A crook won't necessarily be able to steal your identity just from a receipt but when paired with other documents, it gives the crook a snapshot of your identity which can lead to identity theft.
  • Unprotected phone.  Your phone should be password protected.  The longer the password code, the better.
  • Checkbook.  Like a debit card, bad checks can be written.  Just a few checks may be better than the entire checkbook.
  • Work badges.  If stolen, someone could access your work place which could cause major issues.
  • Gift cards.  If stolen, they can be used like cash.
  • Social security number.  Never carry this with you unless it will be required.  Once a bad person has this number, your life may become quite disrupted.
  • Passport.  These are accepted more easily than other stolen documents.
